NEW "KARABAKH" WEBSITE BASED IN LONDON OFFERS AZERI PERSPECTIVE

We had heard that this new website focusing on the Karabakh issue from a purely Azeri perspective had started up. We present it here solely as a point of interest for those readers who would like to see what those on the other side of the divide have to say. While there are other sites that take a pro-Azeri point of view on the matter, this site appears to be one of the better ones in terms of public relations.

ARCHITECTS IN ARMENIA PROTEST DESTRUCTION OF HISTORIC YEREVAN... CITE HRAIR HOVNANIAN'S PLANS TO REDESIGN PRE-SOVIET BUILDING AS CASE IN POINT

In a joint appeal to Prime Minister Andranik Markarian , a group of influential architects of Armenia, have called for the government's "immediate intervention" in what they see as the illegal destruction of the country's historical and cultural legacy.

The architects cite a dozen pre-Soviet buildings that have already been razed by private developers despite the fact that they were included in a list of architectural edifices to be protected by the government during the recent redevelopment of sections of central Yerevan.

Varazdat Harutiunian, a longstanding member of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, draws attention to the recent sale by the government of a pre-Soviet building to American-Armenian millionaire and Armenian Assembly founder Hrair Hovnanian. The building, which dates back to 1905, once housed the government of the First Armenian Republic (1918-1920).

Mr. Hovnanian plans to radically redesign the building by adding two stories and will only preserve the ornate facade. The new edifice will house the Yerevan office of the Armenian Assembly.

**** If you agree with this group of Armenian architects and with other concerned citizens that the tide of private development needs to be regulated in a fair and equitable manner in order that SOMETHING of pre-Soviet Yerevan remains... YOU CAN E-MAIL THESE INDIVIDUALS AND VOICE YOUR CONCERNS !!!!!

CAFESJIAN AS ARMENIA'S NEW PATRON OF THE ARTS???

THE NEW FACE OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN ARMENIA???

OK....So we probably don't know much about art, let alone what passes as contemporary art.

But what do you say about the above newly installed piece, entitled "AHOY" by the British artist Paul Cox. It was recently placed at the Monument Terrace in the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. According to the Cafesjian Foundation website it's a pretty well-known sculpture. Who would have known? The website states that renovations at the Cascade site for the Caafesjian Arts Museum are continuing apace and are to be completed in 2007. Can any one clue us in? Does the Cafesjian Foundation intend to monopolize the arts just as its doing with Armenia's media??

AZERI FOREIGN MINISTER DECLARES UPCOMING KARABAKH CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM - NULL AND VOID

At the recent meeting of the OSCE foreign ministers, the Azeri FM, Elmar Mammadyarov voiced doubts as to the sincerity of the Armenian side to settle the Karabakh conflict.

In fact, the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan did not meet at the two day conclave. Mammadyarov explained this by stating that he had meet with his Armenian counterpart, Vartan Oskanian, at the recent Minsk meeting . He concluded that the Armenian side was still analyzing the results of the talks between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan. Since there was nothing new to report, there was no need for another meeting.

According to the Azeri Foreign Minister, if the Armenian side really wished to settle the conflict, there would not be a constitutional referendum in Karabakh. "As far as I understand, the international structures will not accept the results of the referendum. It is a waste of efforts, time and nerves which can negatively affect the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict."
